How To Write a Short Story

Ideas for writing

Ask yourself the following questions to help you get started:

· Where did the holiday you're going to write about take place? (in your own country? abroad?)

· What happened on the holiday to make it unforgettable? Was it something good, like falling in love? Was it something bad, like having a terrible accident?

· What people were involved in the story apart from yourself? Have no more than 2 or 3 other people so your story isn't too complicated.

· What happened before the main event of your story? What happened afterwards? How does the story end?

· Where can you include the words: 'It was a holiday I will never forget'? You can put them either at the start or at the end.

Drafting and proofreading your work  FURTHER INFORMATIO

You should look at your first draft of the task and decide:

· Does your story stick to the point?

· Are the events told in a clear and logical way?

· Is the language correct with a good range of structures?

· Will the reader enjoy reading your story?

· Is the style OK?

If the answer to any of these questions is 'no' you will need to do some more drafting!

Now that you have seen on how to write a short story, you should be able to develop the story given below.

Question: Your school where you are studying English is holding a short story competition:

Write a short story with the title 'The holiday of a lifetime'. The best story will be published in the school magazine.

Write your composition for your teacher (around 120-180 words).

Note: This exercice is to be superviced by your teacher for feedback.

Future continuous and Future perfect

Future continuous & Future perfect

The future continuous (will be + ‘ing’ form) and the future perfect (will have + past participle) tenses are used to talk about events in the future.

Future continuous

• Don’t ring at 8 o’clock. I’ll be watching Who Wants to be a Millionaire.
• This time tomorrow we’ll be sitting on the beach. I can’t wait!

We use the future continuous to talk about something that will be in progress at or around a time in the future.

• Don’t phone grandma now, she’ll be having dinner.
• The kids are very quiet. They’ll be doing something wrong, I know it!

These sentences are not about the future but we can use the future continuous to talk about what we assume is happening at the moment.

Future Perfect

• Do you think you will have finished it by next Thursday?
• In 5 years time I’ll have finished university and I’ll be able to earn some money at last.

We use the future perfect to say that something will be finished by a particular time in the future.

We often use the future perfect with ‘by’ or ‘in’

• I think astronauts will have landed on Mars by the year 2020.
• I’ll have finished in an hour and then you can use the computer.

‘By’ means ‘not later than a particular time’ and ‘in’ means 'within a period of time’. We don’t know exactly when something will finish.

• I promise I’ll have done all the work by next Saturday.

We don’t know exactly when he will finish the work – maybe Thursday, maybe Friday – but definitely before Saturday.

We only use the passive when we are interested in the object or when we do not know who caused the action.

Example: Appointments are required in such cases.

We can only form a passive sentence from an active sentence when there is an object in the active sentence.

This is how to form the present simple passive voice

Object + To be in present simple + Past Participle

Active:	Peter	builds	a house.
Passive:	A house	is built	by Peter.

Example: 

Active	Peter	builds	a house.	Simple Present
Passive:	A house	is built	by Peter.
